Scottish Thistles & Silver Linings: A Meaningful Way to Celebrate Love This February

Beyond the Roses: Why the Thistle is the True Symbol of Love This February

The Scottish winter has a way of making you appreciate the small glows. Between the dusting of snow we’ve had recently in Sanquhar and the rumors of the Aurora Borealis dancing just out of sight behind the clouds, February has felt particularly ethereal this year.

I’ll admit, I spent a few late nights recently peering out the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of that famous green glow. While the "Great Aurora" remained invisible to me this time, it got me thinking about the things that exist even when we can't see them—like the deep roots of tradition and the lasting bonds of friendship.

More Than Just a Date on the Calendar

With Valentine’s Day approaching, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush of supermarket roses and cardboard cards. But here at Elvenstar Design, I believe February 14th (and "Galentine’s" on the 13th!) should be about something more substantial.

Whether you are celebrating a partner who has been your rock, a best friend who is always a phone call away, or even yourself—marking that connection with something handcrafted feels different. It feels permanent.

The Strength of the Thistle

This year, I’m putting the spotlight on a piece that isn’t soft or fleeting: The Silver Thistle Pin.

While roses are the traditional choice for romance, there is something incredibly romantic about the thistle. It is a flower of resilience. It thrives in the rugged Scottish landscape, standing tall against the wind and the frost. To give a thistle is to say, "Our bond is strong, protective, and enduring."

Each pin is textured in my Sanquhar studio to catch the light—much like those elusive auroras—mimicking the wild, natural beauty of the flower that defines our hills.

A Note for the Planners
